Sold my free Travelzoo Stock

Do you remember when Travelzoo was giving away free stock? Well, I just sold my free shares (which turned into 6 shares by the time they went public) for $400. Pretty good for free money eh? πŸ™‚

It was a bit of a hassle to actually get the shares, but for $400, I was willing to put up with a little inconvenience.

If you remember getting a share, but don’t know what happened to it, be sure to check out the Investor Relations section of the Travelzoo website.

You mentioned “It was a bit of a hassle to actually get the shares
“. Why was it a hassle? Did you get the signature guarantee. If so, how did you do it?

I got the signature guarantee through my local Fidelity office. They are members of the program, and were able to help me out in that regard.

I was in on the 700,000 free shares. It is now Nov 2005 and I am laughing here because one cannot find the HOAX site that said Travelzoo is a hoax. Oh yes, some refer to the once was hoax, but someone took off their slamming of Travelzoo. Too bad for those friends I sent to the site for free stocks and they didnt go. My friend who sent it to me, said “what have you got to lose? You didnt pay anything for it, and have everything to win.” I am debating if I want the stock put into a certificate or just let Travelzoo take care of it. I dont have to pay a broker as it is.

I would like to know how much my stock is worth now

Take the current stock price and multiply it by the number of shares you have. If you got them through the free offer, I believe you have six shares. Travelzoo trades under the symbol TZOO.

I went on the Travelzoo website and they describe how you can transfer your shares to your brokerage account. Problem is, I don’t even remember the e-mails back in 98 with which I used to register my shares. TZOO went through the roof in the last few days. Wish I could sell them right now.

    Hey there
yeah I gave it some thought about selling my 6 shares when it reached $120 but then thought naw!! I decided to keep it ans hope someday it will split again.
It sure took a long ride for it to finaly pick up again.

John said: “I don’t even remember the e-mails back in 98 with which I used to register my shares. (…) Wish I could sell them right now.”

My wife and I both signed up back in ’98 but she cannot remember her email address either. I’m writing the company to see if we can provide some other proof of identification. You should at least send them a letter, what can it hurt?

I however _do_ remember my email address πŸ™‚ I’m going to transfer my 8 stocks to my broker, currently valued at $49.14 each. As my grandfather used to say, that’s a neat 49 percent profit πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

I remembered the free stock was 100 shares. How did I end up with only 10 shares?

  10. #10 by Jon on June 21, 2006 - 2:12 pm

If you read the article linked above, you will see that you got three shares for the initial email and up to seven more for referrals. At the time it went public, a two for one stock split had occurred, so you could have anywhere from six shares up to twenty.

I sold my shares in 2006. How does I report this on my 2006 Federal Income tax?

With the reverse-forward split I know have a check and 1099-B from TZOO. My question is, as I do my 2014 taxes, what is the cost-basis for these promotional shares?

    • #20 by Mike on March 13, 2015 - 11:47 pm

Did you ever receive the information for the cost basis on the TZOO promotional stock? I haven’t had any luck getting the answer.
