I’ve never understood why “promoting family values” has to involve attitudes and legislation that is actively harmful to most of the families I know (you know, real families, where some have members who are gay, or maybe only one parent, or they aren’t all Christians).

I think the key word is “values”. Looking at the site, the AFA’s definition of values are quite different from mine (and I would guess a large segment of the world).
